Biography
Isabella I of Castile (c April 22, 1451 - Nov 26, 1504 CE) was one of the most influential monarchs in Spanish history. Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon united her own holding in Castile and Leon with Aragon into one unified Spanish state that went on to become a global empire. Isabella's reign is most notable for her role in completing the Reconquista by conquering the last Muslim stronghold of Granada in 1492, ending nearly 800 years of Muslim rule in Spain. That same year, she sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage, which led to the European discovery of the Americas and set Spain on the path to becoming a global colonial power.
Isabella was also deeply devout, and her religious policies were a central part of her reign. She supported the Spanish Inquisition to root out heresy and ordered the expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain. Her strong Catholic faith and her desire to purify Spanish society influenced many of her political decisions. Isabella and Ferdinand together shaped Spain’s political future through a series of dynastic marriages for their children, securing Spanish power in Europe for the next century. Isabella died in 1504 after a sudden illness.
