Biography

Julius Caesar (c 100 - 44 BCE) was a Roman general, statesman, and dictator. Born into a patrician family, Caesar gained prominence as a military leader during his conquest of Gaul (58–50 BCE), where he expanded Rome’s territory and solidified his reputation as a brilliant tactician. In 60 BCE, he seized political power and formed the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus. However, tensions within the Triumvirate eventually led to a civil war between Caesar and Pompey. In 44 BCE Caesar marched his army across the Rubicon and into Rome, securing sole political authority. His rule was marked by significant changes, including land redistribution, the introduction of the Julian calendar and expanding the Roman Senate. Caesar was also well-known as a brilliant writer and cultural icon, bringing most of the known world firmly into Rome’s orbit. However, his growing power and concentration of authority alarmed many in the Senate, leading to his assassination on March 15, 44 BCE, known as the Ides of March. Caesar's death marked the end of the Roman Republic and set the stage for the rise of the Roman Empire under his adopted heir, Augustus, who became the first emperor of Rome.
