Biography
Empress Suiko (c. 554 CE – 15 April 628 CE) was both Japan’s first empress and the longest reigning empress of Japan. Suiko was a pivotal figure in Japan’s transformation from smaller, clan-based rule into a centralized state. During her 35-year reign, she encouraged political reforms based on merit rather than clan-affiliation and opened relations with the imperial Chinese state. Suiko was one of the first Buddhist rulers of Japan, having become a nun prior to her coronation. Despite her own religious preferences, she also encouraged her subjects towards devotion to traditional Japanese Shintoism. Perhaps most importantly, Suiko’s reign marked the first official effort to produce a written historical imperial record. By the year of her death, Suiko had consolidated power into a central imperial state that endures into the modern era.
