Biography

Napoleon Bonaparte (c August 15, 1769 – May 5, 1821 CE) was a French military general who rose to prominence after the French Revolution and later crowned himself Emperor of France.

Born to a minor noble family on the island of Corsica, which was at that time a French territory, the young Napoleon showed early promise in military tactics. During the French Revolution, he made a name for himself clearing out royalist insurgents in Paris. He seized military control of France in 1799 and declared himself emperor in 1804, before turning his eyes to Europe in a series of battles called the Napoleonic Wars. He won major victories against Germany, Italy, Spain and Britain as well as securing colonial territories in India, the Americas and the Caribbean. His disastrous campaign against Russia in 1812 ended his imperial expansion and Napoleon was forced into exile in 1814. However, he escaped his island captivity and launched the famous Hundred Days campaign before suffering a final crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Exiled again to a remote island in the South Atlantic, the emperor died in 1821 at the age of 51. While mostly remembered for his great European wars and conquests, Napoleon also reformed French civil law and education, established the Bank of France and revolutionized military tactics and army organization.
