Biography

Haile Selassie I (c. 1892 CE – 1975 CE) was the last Emperor of Ethiopia and considered to be Jah, the returned messiah, by the global Rastafarian religion. Born as Ras Bitwaddad Tesemma, he ascended the throne as Negus of Shewa and later became Emperor. As ruler, he resisted Italian colonization and promoted Pan-Africanism. His government outlawed slavery, wrote the first Ethiopian constitution, and promoted public education and works projects. However, by the mid-70s his rulership was rocked by military unrest and, as a result of drought and widespread famine, Selassie was overthrown in 1974 and murdered in 1975. Despite this, Haile Selassie is still venerated by up to 1 million Rastafarians worldwide.
