Biography

Cleopatra VII (c. 69 BCE – 30 BCE) was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic empire of Egypt. Known for her intelligence and beauty, Cleopatra survived exile and a rivalry with her brother for the throne by striking a famous political and romantic alliance with Julius Caesar. With Roman military backing, Cleopatra assumed sole rulership of the Egyptian empire and gave birth to Caesar’s son, Caesarion, who she named heir to the Roman Empire. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BCE, Cleopatra made an alliance with Roman general Mark Antony to assert her son’s right to the throne. Her reign came to a dramatic end in 31 BCE at the naval Battle of Actium, where their forces were defeated by Caesar's heir, Octavian. To avoid the humiliation of being paraded through Rome as a captive, Cleopatra committed suicide in August of 30 BCE. Her death ended 3,000 years of Egyptian pharaonic rule and ushered in the era of the Roman Empire.
