Biography

Queen Elizabeth I (c. 1533 CE – 1603 CE) was one of England’s most brilliant and successful monarchs. She survived the turbulent reign of her father, King Henry VIII and the religious purges of her sister, Queen Mary I to assume the throne at the age of 25. Reversing years of bloody conflict, Elizabeth promoted religious tolerance and the rise of Protestant Christianity. Dubbed the "Virgin Queen" for her refusal to marry, she used the possibility of a marriage alliance to leverage peace with her European neighbors. Her reign was defined by the dramatic defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The resultant peace and stability of her 44-year reign produced a massive English cultural renaissance and the rise of the British Empire.
