Biography

Montezuma II (c. 1466–1520) was the ninth emperor of the Aztec Empire, reigning from 1502 until his death. He ascended to the throne after the death of his uncle, Emperor Ahuitzotl, and his reign is marked by both the height of Aztec power and its eventual downfall. Montezuma expanded the empire through military conquests and strengthened its political and religious systems, but he also faced significant challenges during his reign, particularly the arrival of Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés in 1519.

Montezuma initially welcomed Cortés, possibly due to Aztec prophecies of the return of the god Quetzalcoatl, but his decision to engage with the Spanish led to his capture and eventual death. After being taken prisoner by Cortés, Montezuma's power and authority weakened, and he died under mysterious circumstances, with some accounts suggesting he was killed by his own people who had turned against him. His death marked the beginning of the rapid collapse of the Aztec Empire, which fell to the Spanish in 1521. Montezuma's reign is remembered as a tragic turning point in the history of the Aztec civilization.
